My works have come to more and more abstract since I left Tokyo in 1996 as a commercial illustrator. I rarely have done figure paintings last 20 years. But this piece was an exception. 2010 I lived in Hana, remote sacred coast on Island of Maui. I spent many months by myself and I had precious opportunitiy to practice ancient Hula Kahiko under Kumu @kkanakaole.
I remember I had to paint this girl even though I was not aware who she was back then. She appeared in my day dream and made me to paint her. Later my hānai mama @junko_wong taught me about Hawaiian mythology of Hopoe, who was killed into lava rock by Pele, Goddess of Volcano.

イラストレーターとして仕事をしていた1996年頃に日本を離れ、以降作風がどんどん抽象的になり、ほとんど人物画というものを描いていません。でも、2010年に描いたこの作品は例外です。マウイ島のハナという、聖なるジャングルの秘境で暮らし、クム・カウイ・カナカオレ @kkanakaole から古代フラのカヒコを教えていただくという幸運に恵まれ、何カ月も一人で過ごしていた時の絵です。不思議なのですが、自分でこれは誰を描いたのか、彼女が誰なのかは知る余地もなかったのですが、なぜか彼女を描かずにいられなかったのです。白日夢に彼女が現れ、描かされたのでした。後になって「ハワイのママ」ジュンコ・ウォング から『火山の女神ペレによって溶岩に生き埋めにされたホポエの伝説』を教えてもらったのでした。
