Photo by @amivitale Suyian, the first elephant rescued by northern Kenya's Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e), is comforted in her first moments after arrival. @r.e.s.c.u.e is the first Samburu community-owned elephant sanctuary in Africa, and wildlife keepers there are working to rehabilitate abandoned and orphaned elephants in order to return them to the nearby wild herds.
Community-based conservation is a powerful way forward to protect vast tracts of Africa. This elephant sanctuary is the culmination of a two-decades-long process of tipping conservation upon its head—protecting wildlife for, and not just from, people. In that sense the sanctuary is as much about people as the elephants. Already they have successfully returned six orphaned elephants to the wild, and community ties to wildlife grow stronger with each passing year.
