When I arrived, I instantly realized that the predicted size of the crowds were going to be huge. I knew immediately that the best way to photograph this scene would be from above. By midday, I was able to rent a chopper and we made one circle over the beach. I was lucky enough to catch this view. It was an amazing sight to behold, like a looking at a quilt or tapestry. The festival has drawn huge crowds for years. Last year about a half million people came. Unfortunately, California is one of the many states that has seen a surge in coronavirus cases, so this year’s festival has been canceled. I'm hoping that next year this will all be behind us.
