Video by @Joel Sartore I The only toad native to Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rican crested toad is known for its distinctive snout and bony head crest. Once found throughout the lowland portion of the island, this species began to experience population declines in the 1920s, when the marine toad was introduced from South America to control sugar cane grubs. Marine toads prey on the tadpoles of crested toads, and compete with adults for food, habitat, and breeding sites, threatening the native species’ chance of survival. As a result, this amphibian was placed on a species survival plan, which focuses on research, habitat protection, community outreach, and reintroduction programs. Through this plan, North American zoos and aquariums have bred over 230,000 tadpoles to be released (and monitored) into protected ponds in the Guanica National Forest. Video taken @theomahazoo.
