I usually work from home, so living in quarantine hasn't been so much of a challenge, actually not having outside distractions has been good for me. While at home in 2017, I was disturbed by the constant sound of low flying helicopters. I realized this was part of the convoy waiting to accompany Donald Trump's helicopter to Yokota airbase. The President of American flying over the suburbs of Tokyo was an opportunity not to be missed, so I headed to the roof of my building to get a shot. From the vantage point, I could see there were at least three convoys of four American military helicopters circling Tokyo. After a while, I was distracted by movement below. A guy wrapped in bedsheets was doing his washing on the balcony. This scene of simple domesticity playing out as America's machines of war roared overhead said so much to me about Japan's relationship with America. I am looking at the images I took on that morning, now reflecting on how I could use them together to tell the story and convey what I felt in that moment.
