ガゴシアン・ギャラリーさんのインスタグラム写真 - (ガゴシアン・ギャラリーInstagram)「#GagosianOnline: Over the next ten days, more than twenty works will be made available on gagosian.com for Basel Online, released in five curated presentations. The first cycle is now live and features five artworks that investigate or challenge various conventions of painting. Some of these artists, such as Georg Baselitz and Nathaniel Mary Quinn, pursue deliberate disruptions to compositional traditions. For example, Baselitz’s signature inverted figure motif acts as a device to disorient perspective and complicate illusionistic representation. Adopting a different approach, Quinn overturns the referential or documentary conventions of portraiture, instead exploring the ways that memory and the subconscious shape visual perception. Meanwhile, Mary Weatherford experiments with unexpected materials such as neon to reconceive the painterly medium through alternative forms of gestural mark making. Inspired by Chinese calligraphy used in a Song dynasty–era poetic correspondence between friends, Brice Marden transforms the private, almost coded, language of glyphs into a universal formal dialogue between color and line, resisting expressivity. Finally, Joe Bradley engages with the legacy of gestural abstraction by adapting established techniques used by his artistic predecessors to include unplanned scuffs and scrapes, resulting in an immediately recognizable style of his own.
