His interdisciplinary fusion of archiving, performance, institution building, painting, and sculpting is deeply rooted in African American histories and cultures, and revolves around the transformation of objects, edifices, and communities through art and cultural activity. Gates’s scheduled exhibition at Gagosian, New York, was planned in advance of both the COVID-19 crisis and the tragic murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor. His Artist Spotlight—a gallery initiative developed in response to the constraints imposed by COVID-19—happens to fall at this moment.
