My grandmother was jailed for 5 years by the Apartheid state in South Africa. I’m surprised at myself that it’s taken me this long to make the leap to Abolition, despite seeing the ongoing effects of the harm that incarceration and state violence has caused my loved ones. I’m struggling to get my head around that.

Yesterday @no_more_prisons organised an incredible webinar which introduced & contextualised Abolition, the origins of punitive justice & policing, and looked to the future after Abolition, where communities hold themselves accountable. This video by the Barnard Center for Research on Women explains Transformative Justice, and I think is a great place to start if you’re wondering about the alternatives to the systems we have now.
Featuring @adriennemareebrown, @mia.mingus, @stas.phoenix, Ann Russo, @estebanitos, Martina Kartman, Priya Rai, and Shira Hassan.

Created by Project Nia and the Barnard Center for Research on Women.
Video produced by Mariame Kaba, Dean Spade, and Hope Dector.
