It’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. If you haven’t already, I implore you to read up on our Asian American Movement of the late 60s–70s. On the West Coast, AAPA was established by Yuji Ichioka and Emma Gee in 1968. They were deeply influenced by the Black Power and anti-war movements. At the same time on the East Coast, Asian Americans for Action (AAA, est. 1969) was founded by two Nisei women, Kazu Iijima and Minn Matsuda. Yuri Kochiyama was one of its notable members. AAA was considered the most important organization to link the Asian American Movement to the Black Power Movement. POWER TO THE PEOPLE. BLACK POWER TO BLACK PEOPLE.
