Take a quick escape with "Lunar Landscape," c. 1944 in our @hirshhorn's collection. At the New York World’s Fair of 1939, Isamu Noguchi was impressed with the malleability and strength of a new material called magnesite, which he used in his "Lunar" series. The abstract forms in his piece seem like the moon's cratered surface, with corks hovering like satellites.
The son of a Japanese poet and an American writer, Noguchi started taking evening classes in sculpture while studying medicine. He became well-known not only for his sculpture, but also as a designer of landscapes, sculpture gardens, stage sets and furniture.
