I’m joining @sierraclub for #EndangeredSpeciesDay to help raise awareness about the extinction crisis. We have been losing our wildlife and wild habitat at an unprecedented rate, so it’s up to us to work together to fight for a better world. The Sierra Club has a fantastic goal of asking leaders to protect 30% of lands and waters in the United States in effort to better protect the wildlife we love and to stop extinction in its tracks.

One such animal that I am lucky enough to spend ample time with year after year is the largest creature to ever roam the planet, the blue whale. Once numbering up to half a million individuals, blue whales were hunted to near extinction with only a couple thousand remaining. Today, we estimate their population to be around 10,000-20,000, better than it was a few decades ago, but still a mere fraction of what they once were. Even though they are kings of the sea, they still face many threats from ship strikes, fishing nets, noise pollution, and illegal hunting. I hope blue whales and all other endangered animals alike get the protection they need and deserve to thrive for centuries to come.
