About this time last year I visited the Bahamas to swim and photograph wild dolphins. On our second day out, we found a pod of bottlenose dolphins near the end of our all day outing. Right before I was about to get in, the captain told me to “swim past the sharks to reach the dolphins”. Now, I was already fairly shaken up since a few hours prior I had a large tiger shark approach me without warning, so hearing that there were more sharks made me hesitate before plunging in. He assured me they were only nurse sharks, which patrol the sea floor looking for the same snacks the dolphins do. I jumped in and was immediately greeted by the whole pod of dolphins as they came over to investigate the new inept swimmer. The bottlenose were a thrill to watch as they searched for food by digging and creating craters in the sand, always being followed by the nurse sharks below. I still kept looking behind me for another tiger shark though.....
