Photo by @joshuacogan | Devotees leave a temple in Ubud during the celebration of Galungan, the initiation of the festival calendar year here in Bali. It is one of the most important ceremonies on the island, and it opens a 10-day window in which the spirits of the ancestors come down to visit their homes. It also celebrates the victory of dharma (goodness/kindness/order) over adharma (evil/chaos). As such, it is a period of deep purification, prayer, reflection, and realignment.
In Balinese Hinduism, the struggle between dharma and adharma is less binary and more thought of as rebalancing. It is believed that we all have both elements within us, and it is impossible to be pure. Our job is simply to seek to increase the balance in favor of kindness and compassion. As such, rituals and offerings of abundance are placed at every home, altar, and temple.
