Echoes of the state’s origin myth of Ponce de Leon’s whimsical quest for the fountain of youth show up repeatedly throughout Florida's attractions. The state's early promoters helped shape the idea of Florida as a land with magical waters offering a sun-filled vitality. Health spas sprouted up around springs, touting sunshine and cures for all manner of ailments. The campaign gained traction during World War II when grand hotels were compelled to house soldiers who would later return in droves with their families.
