So far we have learnt that food production is the single biggest impact humans have had on the planet’s ecosystems to date. Food is responsible for more than 80% of deforestation, 70% of fresh water consumption, is the largest single cause of biodiversity loss, and produces more than 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions (not to mention soil erosion, animal rights, pesticides and packaging). On top of that, 30% of food produced is wasted before it even reaches our plates - this 30% is enough to solve world hunger AND account for the 2 extra billion people expected by 2050. Over the next few weeks we are going to be exploring the solutions and how each of us can take action in our own lives and mobilise our communities to inspire systemic change.
