The island of Réunion is a hiker’s paradise, not a surfer’s. The coast of this former French colony 400 miles off Madagascar might seem like the ideal spot for a beach vacation, but shark-plagued waters keep tourists landlocked. Since 2011, the small island has been the site of 1 out of every 3 fatal shark attacks on the planet. Réunion’s tourism office has worked to rebrand the place long thought of as France’s Hawaii as a destination for hiking, camping and ecotourism.
