A colossal so-called “destination for style and play” in New Jersey is ushering in the era of the post-shopping mall. As malls around the country close and young people’s buying habits evolve, this mall – boasting the name American Dream, no less – pitches itself as a “collection of unique experiences,” rather than a traditional space for retail. The $5 billion not-mall has been in development for 15 years. Its 3 million square feet of real estate include an indoor ski slope, water park and the largest indoor theme park in the Western Hemisphere. Traditional storefronts are replaced with pop-up shops and food courts with a candy department store. Our critic @astromwallhess reviewed this mall and found its empty spaces and attractions both alienating and foreboding.
