The last time we entered the ’20s, Americans were faced with a government-mandated dry spell. Prohibition went into effect at midnight on Jan. 17, 1920, and the cheeky headline on The New York Times front page read “John Barleycorn Died Peacefully at the Toll of 12.” But as the authorities stopped the sale of alcohol and destroyed remaining supplies, speakeasies and bootlegging operations popped up around the country. This #TBT photo of federal officials destroying cases of beer was taken in 1923 by one of our photographers.
