I recently photographed these islands for “What it’s like to live in the shadow of an active volcano,” now on the National Geographic website. As the writer Giannella Garrett explains: “I’m energized by the experience of hiking this volcano again. But I realize I don’t need to ascend Stromboli’s summit to find satisfaction.
