Photo by @brianskerry | A sperm whale calf, with mouth open, swims among her family in the waters of the eastern Caribbean Sea. With the largest brain of all animals on Earth, they are also our planet’s largest predator. Portrayed as monsters for centuries, these animals and their societies are far more complex than ever believed, according to recent research. To sperm whales, families are very important. They are led by older, wise females that make decisions for the family unit. In the time I've spent with these animals, I've been amazed at their tenderness to one another, and have observed what can only be described as joy when they socialize with each other.
