Photos by @dina_litovsky | At Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, visitors are surrounded by the glowing lava of Kilauea, the youngest and most active volcano on the Big Island. The lava has been almost continuously flowing since 1983, attracting volcanophiles, adrenaline-loving tourists who get close enough to the lava to poke it with a stick. These images were taken in 2017. In May 2018, Kilauea erupted, destroying over 700 homes and devastating the surrounding areas. Geologists have long warned about the perils of such tourism, since eruptions can happen without warning. The tragic events of last week are a stark reminder that the danger is real. While visiting an active crater on the White Island, New Zealand, the volcano suddenly erupted, leaving eight people dead and more than 30 injured.
