That's because working farms and ranches make up most of the unprotected links in the statewide Florida Wildlife Corridor. The orange grove in the first photo was recently protected from ever being developed by a conservation easement funded by the Nature Conservancy. Its location on the north banks of the Caloosahatchee River makes this property crucial for the movement of Florida panthers and other wildlife. The new conservation easement marks the first time a Florida citrus grove has been protected for the primary benefit of wildlife. Cattle ranches immediately to the north and south of the grove also provide vital panther habitat and dispersal corridors. Two cattle ranches to the south, both protected by conservation easements with funding from The Nature Conservancy, help connect to vast public lands in the Everglades. Pictured in the second photo, a segment of the Lykes Ranch that is immediately north of the grove, is one of the highest priorities for conservation in Florida.
