They're not holiday lights—they're microscopic algae cells, called Thalassionema nitzschoides.
Alone, they look like straight bars, but together they form stars, snowflakes and other zigzag-like designs. Each individual cell is 10 times thinner than the thinnest strands of hair.
Thalassionema lives in warm waters all over the world. @smithsonianenvironment microbiologists found these in the Chesapeake Bay.
