This belt by Kevin and Valerie Pourier is titled "Winyan Wánakikśin," which means “Women Defenders of Others.” Kevin Pourier (Oglala Lakota) researched, interviewed and collaborated with eight influential Native American women to create the design, now in @smithsoniannmai. Each individual portrait panel took about two weeks to complete.
The women represented are:
1️⃣Susie Silook (Yupik and Inupiaq), author and sculptor who protests violence against Native women 2️⃣Tipiziwin Tolman (Wichiyena Dahkota and Hunkpapa Lakota), who is working to preserve Lakota culture and language 3️⃣Mary Kathryn Nagle (Cherokee Nation), playwright and lawyer specializing in sovereignty of Native nations 4️⃣Wanda Batchelor (Washoe), the first woman ever selected to lead the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California 5️⃣Jodi Archambault (Hunkpapa and Oglala Lakota), President Barack Obama’s special assistant for Native American affairs 6️⃣Roxanne Swentzell (Santa Clara Pueblo), artist whose artworks are revered for their social commentary and have been shown across the globe 7️⃣Suzan Shown Harjo (Cheyenne and Hodulgee Muscogee), poet, writer and policy advocate 8️⃣Bobbi Jean Three Legs (Hunkpapa Lakota), largely credited with helping start the Standing Rock movement
