Pierre Cardin revolutionized the bold shoulder look that resurfaced in the 1970s. After his first visit to China in 1978, he found inspiration in the pagoda at a time when other designers were focused on replicating details of the Mao jacket. This led him to create his iconic, strong-silhouetted “Pagoda” suits that consisted of jackets with extreme, padded pagoda-like shoulders, turtlenecks, and pants. “For me,” Cardin said, “China was about the shoulder that looked like a pagoda!”⠀
