The banner pays tribute to Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, cofounders of Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), a 1970-73 collective providing shelter and support for homeless youth, sex workers, and trans and gender-nonconforming people. Newly created for the exhibition “Nobody Promised You Tomorrow,” the banner alludes to the lived experiences of STAR and its members—marked by both precarious material conditions and glamour.
