#MCM Star Wars would not be what it is today without samurai cinema, particularly that of Akira Kurosawa, a major influence on George Lucas. Arguably the most celebrated Japanese filmmaker of all time, Akira Kurosawa directed 30 films in a career spanning 57 years. He was “an autocratic perfectionist with a painter's eye for composition, a dancer's sense of movement and a humanist's quiet sensibility” (New York Times).
You can see his influence all throughout The Mandalorian — even the title character is a classic archetype of a masterless wanderer from a tribe of proud warriors with a rich heritage, presented as a lost warrior who has become a soldier of fortune.
Kurosawa’s voice and mission continues to echo through our work: “The role of the artist is to not look away.”
The Mandalorian is streaming now on Disney+! The next episode (directed by yours truly) streams Nov. 29!
