To successfully mate the male has to cling to the female's shell (from behind) with specially adapted claws on his front flippers. Getting into this position can be tricky when bobbing like a cork on the ocean’s surface. In the Indian Ocean this struggling male green turtle has latched onto the female’s neck with his beak for additional leverage. Mating can last many hours and she takes him on a roller coaster ride along reef flats, down coral drop offs and through sea grass beds.
