I have really strong feelings about that fear that women have to carry. That silent, creeping fear that most women - especially trans women and women of colour - suffer through their whole lives. I had tried writing about this in a song maybe four years ago, when there was yet another incident of violence against a woman walking through a park in Doncaster, nearby where I grew up. I didn't release it, because I had struggled to make the topic feel like something I was proud of proclaiming in a chorus - which I think Courtney's song does beautifully.” 🎹 “Before I knew I was non-binary, it was tricky proclaiming anything related to women because I didn't feel like I succeed at being a woman. It struck me that singing along with Courtney's song while also proclaiming my status as "in-between" was the perfect way to show my support to women, and to engage with the feeling that is inherent in my gender identity: that being a woman is a dangerous feeling for me. It is impossible for me to extricate the feeling of terror around having a body that is assigned female from the feeling of danger related to toxic masculinity - that moment we all experienced when we were little children, when suddenly we are told we can't take our shirt off in public, that we need to cover our bodies so that we are safe.” 🎹 “We all walk through the world with this inherited trauma from our mothers, aunties, grandmothers and beyond - the pain they have felt at the hands of the patriarchy. It feels so natural and good to sing about it, so I really appreciated this opportunity to do so. I recorded it myself, because it felt right to take such a personal experience of the song to a private space. It took a long while to feel confident with my arrangement, but I am so proud of where it ended up.” 💛💛💛Photo 1 by @slightfawn “Milk On Milk” compilation LP is out Nov 15 (pre-order now).
