In August 2018, another egregious systematic discrimination against women surfaced in Japan. Several prestigious Japanese medical schools had rigged female applicants’ test scores lower for years so that they could maintain male-dominance in the medical industry where the work environment is often supposedly “too demanding for women.” Tokyo Medical University for Rejected Women (TMURW) - directed by president Sputniko! and chairwoman Tomomi Nishizawa is a fictional school that the women who were rejected from these medical schools founded so they could continue to fully engage in medicine while fulfilling societal expectations in the Japanese medical industry that traditionally favors men. Using a surgical machine named “Frida”, the TMURW students build the perfect “Elite Male Doctors” that Japan loves and deliver them on drones to hospitals throughout the country. TMURW will also distribute the university brochure for free on Kindle in both English and Japanese. This exhibition shows the photographs, video and installation that illustrate the innovative TMURW school curriculum.
