At Camp Tawonga, “I don't have to hide who I am,” said Jonathan Brunn, a nonbinary 11-year-old. “I can play soccer and braid my hair and nobody judges me.” This summer, for the first time, a 90-year-old Jewish sleepaway camp nestled in the mountains of California offered an all-gender cabin option to its campers. An increasing number of American youth identify as transgender or nonbinary, but gender nonconforming children still face high rates of harassment and are at a higher risk of suicide, studies have found. So at Camp Tawonga, while kids spend 2 and a half weeks splashing around a lake, singing campfire songs, and slathering themselves in mud and paint, they also learn how to build their self-esteem, challenge prejudice and unlearn social norms about gender — regardless of how they identify.
