The galaxy is composed of anywhere from 100 billion to 400 billion stars. On clear nights, where there is no light pollution, it’s possible to see the entire galaxy with the naked eye. It’s simply mesmerizing. Nowadays, you’ll find all sorts of smartphone apps to help you locate it and plan your photo shoot accordingly, depending on your location. While in Patagonia, I was able to determine the exact time during the night when the Milky Way would be positioned over the granite peaks of the Torres del Paine mountain range, with the help of one such app. I set my alarm accordingly, and was awake and outside at just the right moment.
