According to "Facing the Giant: Three Decades of Dissent" co-curator, Pedro Alonzo:⠀
A little girl cradles a grenade with a rose unaware of the military planes that fly overhead. Her posture is deliberately innocent, appearing to have her eyes closed, with her lips nearly kissing the weaponry in her hands, as if a doll. The sense of danger is pervasive, with her fingers positioned on the trigger. The image seems to ask the question, “How did war become so commonplace and banal that it seems fitting in a paint-by-numbers style image?”⠀

Looking to the haunting 1964 political ad for then-presidential candidate Lyndon B. Johnson, which featured a young blonde-haired girl initiating a nuclear countdown by pulling petals from a daisy, Fairey is interested in continuing American culture of fear. With the escalation of US military action over the years, from the Vietnam War to the Iraq War, the artist searches for meaning by portraying this young girl as both a potential victim of conflict or a possible savior for the future, capable of breaking the cycle of violence with a peaceful act.⠀

kcv406 Sheperd and I shared a design teacher, Rob Lawton, who was fierce and inspiring. I learned of Shepherd through Rob at the Creative Circus and love all of his work, starting with his Andre Obey project back during his college days, but I most love his work advocating for justice and humanity. My favorite is a logo that he created for my organization in the early 90’s when we were working to get Victoria’s Secret to use recycled paper for their catalogs. He made an amazing logo for The Paper Campaign, which we turned into murals, stickers and GreenPeace-style banners, all of which helped lead a transformation of the catalog industry toward enviro sustainability.

rojogigante A few of my art students have done copies of this image either in stencil form or silk screen in class. Having followed OBEY from the beginning, I expose my students to your work every year. My current fave mural is the one in Sacramento... of Johnny Cash. Some of my students were able to check it out during it’s creation since we are about an hour away. Keep up the great work.

dr_jauregui Man, back in 2010, my wife and I ran the first “stadium to the sea” course for the 25th anniversary of the LA Marathon. Part of the course ran down Hollywood Blvd and past one of Shep’s Obama Hope murals - right by La Luz De Jesus gallery. Still a highlight of that run for me.

dorian_t My favorite is the last one in Paris, in front of the Stravinsky fountain, right next to Salvator Dali de Jef Aerosol. These two artworks, put together, send a great message. This is a great example of the richness of streetart.
