This infamous and very well-attended show was meant to demonstrate to the public that avant garde art was the product of corrupt and deranged minds, was dangerous to German society, and worthy only of ridicule. Beginning in 1933, the Nazis removed from state-owned museums more than 20,000 abstract and expressionistic artworks, hundreds of which were included in the 1937 exhibition.
