It’s an odd feeling being in a room, of all men. Even more strange when the walls are decorated in fake 18-century paintings, one was depicting a bare-breasted woman. This photograph was taken on my last day in Tashkent while working on part VI of the @outofedenwalk. This image was never published in the magazine, here sharing how a Plov Ceremony at a wedding hall in Tashkent looks and feels just before the rice arrives. A food similar though very different than rice pilaf, such gatherings that occur in the early morning hours verge on sacred, always and only attended by men before special events such as a wedding or to give thanks. Sorry, I don’t get maleness. The plov was delicious.

Open your minds a little people. Yeah it’s a ceremony steeped in “maleness”, but that’s the local culture. Appreciate it for what it is: different to your culture and values, but no less valid. Once went to an Israeli wedding, and it’s the same deal, there were male- and female-only sections of the ceremony. Archaic by western standards? Perhaps. Ancient and captivating? Much more so.

@yoshishimizuphoto It is light example of respect to old people, 1st group are old respectful people, they are getting ready to eat plov and second, they are friends of ?'s brother. Guys getting ready to dinning plov hand by habd to approximately 500 people (waiters). 2nd group will eat plov after ceremony?.

It took me a while to understand that your photo was not a painting itself!! Such a frozen time of old!! I follow you here because you know how to tell us the story behind the image and makes us think about our values and lives in comparison!!

I really love learning about the different cultures thru your storytelling. It also gives me great appreciation for differences between patriarchal and matriarchal societies. I don't get the "men only" vibe either.

@thecelloronin agreed. Also, I am married with three sons - I really enjoy mom’s night out (ladies only). Sometimes it’s nice to just be with ladies and talk/laugh/bond/learn.
