Swipe ~ Tonight I was reading a story in the BBC on how peace and reconciliation take time. There was a quote in the story by Reverend Jacky Manuputty and his commitment to working with Imam Abidin Wakano, two people bringing understanding in a former conflict zone I spent much time in. What he said was essential and truthful...that we can build peace if we want. Through collaboration and kindness:

“Peace here is still fragile because it takes a long time to deal with healing trauma”, Mr Manuputty said. "Through many activities, they started to understand each other. They realised that they had experienced the same fate. To face those who they thought were their fierce enemies. They become friends and peace-makers, crossing the divide."

More than 5,000 people were killed in religious violence which lasted for many years, and at the time over half a million were displaced. This evening I went into the archive looking for photographs I took maybe 20 years ago from a story I did in Ambon for @TIME Magazine magazine. These were the scars of conflict, the displaced. People who then spent their day’s and night’s hiding in the destroyed remains of homes and shops. The work these two individuals are doing should remind us that if we truly give to peace and reconciliation, we can change the world.

darmastyo Thank you for the beautiful message. I’m from Indonesia and Ambon conflict happen when i was teen. We live so far from Ambon that we did not know what really happen, but glad to know it ended with reconcilliation. Such a beatiful reminder that can act as an example for all of us.

callmenatalienoore This is why I’m anti religion. All religions use their religion to stand behind their violence/hate and that’s completely unnecessary and incredibly contradictory
