🐘Before #AsianElephants reach the tipping point of no return, they reach what Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute scientists call the "demographic tipping point." That is the point when the population of a species is no longer growing. If scientists use the demographic tipping point to identify when large, long-lived and slow reproducing animals (like elephants) are in trouble instead of numbers alone, that could help better protect them. It would raise the alarm about the health of their populations much sooner and help policymakers develop focused conservation strategies that address the problems behind the declines before the population crashes to a level it can't recover from. Most Asian elephant populations have passed their demographic tipping points, but if conservation strategies focus on protecting their habitat, preventing human-elephant conflict and stopping poaching for their skin they could recover. #WeSaveSpecies
