At Ealing Art College in West London in 1963 the radical playwright David Mercer came to give a lecture. It was life-changing for me. The title of his first trilogy of plays about the British Working Class inspired the title of MY GENERATION. Any rage in that song was inspired here, not really from the Queen Mother getting my car towed away from outside my flat. That’s just a story to amuse journalists. But in My Generation there was both frustration and ebullience. PS: Freddie Mercury and Ronnie Wood both attended Ealing Art College. So far, I am the only one with an Honorary Doctorate. It must surely be time for Professor Woody? I like the sound of Professor Mercury too. .

This is very interesting! Thanks for sharing! I have analized this song many many times with my students (with no mention to the Queen mother, hahaha), this clue will give a whole new light to that exercise. I have always suspected that there is a secret subterranean reflection about British working class in your work. Also that white onesie you were during the woodstock concert and other life performance arround the Tommy period seems a lot like a worker indumentary, isnt it? Thanks for the lesson professor @yaggerdang

Instagram does seem like an ideal place to settle accountings of past rock press fibs. Professor Townshend sounds dignified, but Dr. Pete is more fun. I know Roger got some three letter honor a while back.... when he's not around do the rest of the fellas refer to him as "his nibs"? I think I saw recently on some talk show that Dr. Pridden calls Roger "Sid", though I forget why.

Ebullience is one of my favorite words! David Mercer sounds hella serious about keeping it real. I like that during the entire kitchen sink angry realism phase in Britain that Ken Russell decides to make surreal “Amelia and The Angel.” @lisirussell ❤️

Why wasn’t Mercer more popular here in the States? Did his message and works not translate very well into American culture? I find Paul Weller’s music the same, as it’s very well-received jn the UK and basically ignored in the US.

Love David Mercer's screenplay for Resnais' film "Providence." Have you seen that one? Resnais' only English-language film. Dynamite cast: Dirk Bogarde, Ellen Burstyn, David Warner, and in the lead, Sir John Gielgud.
