🐢 Our scientists found endangered and elusive #woodturtles in #Virginia by 🧪testing the 💧streams they live in for traces of their 🧬DNA. #eDNA surveys can be powerful tools to help scientists protect wood turtles, which are poached and trafficked for the pet trade. eDNA can help them quickly monitor where wood turtles are living and monitor how their populations are doing. It is also much less expensive than traditional visual encounter surveys. #WeSaveSpecies

Wonderful news, I can’t wait to share this with my students. Thanks for sharing! I wonder if this is being used this to test for invasive species? Caught early, we could mitigate or stop introduced invasive species!

@nature_matt eDNA has seen a fair amount of use in invasive species detection! I’m not super familiar with that side of things but I’ve heard a lot about it
