They live in tried-and-true monogamous pairs (mostly), but being endangered and vulnerable to extinction—they still have their fair share of drama. Hooded cranes Liza and Louie were recommended to breed this year since they have never had chicks before and their genes are super valuable. But the reason they had never had chicks in the past was because they were unable to breed naturally. Keepers at SCBI are experts at helping cranes breed through artificial insemination and the procedure worked for Liza and Louie! Liza laid an egg in May. First-time hooded crane parents usually struggle to raise their first chick, so the egg was given to Mr. Crane and Tempest to serve as surrogate parents. They raised the first and only other hooded crane chick to ever hatch at SCBI. Liza's chick finally hatched on June 12, but not without assistance from keepers. They had to carefully crack the outer shell and cut through some of the inner membranes of the shell to help the chick. It had stopped trying to push itself out of the egg after it made a penny-sized hole. But since keepers swooped in to help, the chick is doing well and has survived the first 7 days after hatching, which are the most critical. #KeepingUpWithTheCranes」6月19日 23時15分 - smithsonianzoo
