Joined at the hip for over half a century, the famously anarchic duo Gilbert & George first met at St Martin’s School of Art in 1967, and have since lived and created art together against the backdrop of London’s East End.

Appearing in the artists’ signature grid style, the work shown here shows a chaos of newspapers trampled into sidewalks and punchy political slogans, crudely juxtaposed with sleek Savile Row-esque shopfronts, intended to highlight the fractured nature of the capital.
-
A monumental example of the artists’ definitive ‘dirty words’ pictures, many of which are held by museums around the world, the work points to the social and cultural disaffection born from the anti-establishment punk rock movement of the late 70s.

It goes on view this Saturday as part of #SothebysContemporary Exhibition. The photographs of Gilbert & George were taken at Pelham Place in 1974 and come from the #CecilBeatonStudioArchive.
