Albert Oehlen’s gigantean self-portrait was created in tribute to the artist’s friend and collaborator Martin Kippenberger who had died from liver cancer at the young age of 44 the previous year.

The rebellious duo from the post-war punk era had been friends, drinking partners, band mates and co-painters for two decades. Here, Oehlen paints himself bereft, wide eyed and literally empty-handed, stripped of his best friend and the artistic relationship that had so characterised his early career.

The painting will make its debut in Sotheby’s Contemporary art evening auction having remained in the Falckenberg Collection since 1999, the year after it was painted.
