The poet David Shapiro describes flowers as ‘the real nudes in the œuvre of Mondrian’. Painted in the 1930s, Gladiolus is a stunning example of the artist’s mastery of the still life, whose flower paintings acted as a constant even at moments when he attained his most pure form of abstraction. The antidote to his conceptual abstraction, these works allowed the artist to express himself emotionally.
