1/3. I love than when in my last post I mentioned going on a very special retreat, some of you thought I had gone to do ayahuasca or mushrooms in the desert...
.
When actually, I went on a six day fast. Before you tell me I am crazy - which is why I wanted to do the full experience before talking about it - maybe read below!
.
I’ve been curious about fasts. Maybe you listened to my podcast with @perla_servan_schreiber where she talks about it. She’s been doing it for years. As well as my friends @annenoemiebianchi and Jasmine @oliomaestro ...
.
All three women, very balanced, very educated on the subject, very happy in their bodies, and all of them have been doing it for a very long time. .
After going through some fertility treatments a couple years ago, it had been suggested to me to detox to help my body regenerate after this heavy protocol.
But really, all this is not my culture. I believe in a balanced diet all year long and voilà. Detox, whatever. .
Then over these last three years, I truly dedicated myself to living better. Those of you who’ve been following me know I’ve been through a few things. It’s been hard and enlightening. It’s been life changing, challenging each my beliefs, my culture, my self.
.
As my self discovery set me on a more conscious journey, the idea of fasting didn’t seem so crazy anymore. The idea of getting to know myself better, of being able to connect with my body and my soul differently started making sense. .
Also, I am curious.
.
Lastly, being single this past months has been one of the true gifts of my life. It’s like suddenly I am able to see so much clearly who I am, what I want, and what impact I want to have in the world. In other words, I am coming out of one deep self discovery cycle, regenerated. .
So I thought - if there is one time to do a fast, it’s now. For many reasons, but also as a symbolic way to mark the passage from one cycle to the other. .
My friend Stephanie @co has been going to the same place for fasts for years. So when she told me she was going, I said all right me too. .
.
.
I’ll tell you how it went in my next post!
Have you ever been on one?

I have. I think the first fast I did I was in my mid-40’s. It was a 21 day cleanse that started with a green juice fast for seven days, then the second week of raw vegetables, then third week of lightly cooked vegetables and a slow re-integration of food. The euphoria and energy I had was off the charts. Over the years I would do shorter cleanses of just green juice for 3-5 days. When I was 50 I read a book called ‘Crazy, Sexy Diet which had a 21 day cleanse at the end. I learned so much about nutrition, fasting, environmental healthy eating, supplements, etc. I did the 21 days and it set me up to change the way I ate for years to come. From that I understood that we need to understand how best our body works for us ~ one cleanse does not fit all ~ and I never did a cleanse again. I’m not against them, I think they are a stepping stone to better eating. What I will say is they can if done long-term (more than 3 or so days repeatedly) have your body think you are starving it, and it will start storing fat any which way it can as it’s in survival mode. I noticed after my several years of once or twice a year weekly fasts that I had actually put on 15 lbs. my bodies’ regulatory system had been thrown off course. Once I understood nutrition and healthy eating (80/20 ~ 80% healthy foods to 20% not so healthy food) my body got back on track and I’m always at a constant weight, rarely get sick, etc. I know some people fast once a week, or don’t eat any food until noon or so each day to give their digestive system a break each day. Everyone finds their path, and sounds like you’re walking yours. ?

Please don’t laugh ... but I had been doing Ramadan for more than 10 years not because of the religion really but because it was for me like a habit, like something cultural, a moment I shared with my family. We used to take our dinner (rupture du jeûne) all together with friends and those was happy moments : we were sharing more then food... we used to discuss more than the other evenings of the year. As a overweight person, strangling with my body issues, I have to say it was something more spiritual than religious. You do really experiment what is hunger, you feel it in your body. That’s why we have all forgotten today. We eat by habits at regular times without thinking about your body needs. Also I do remember I felt stronger mentally because I didn’t thing (even my family —-) hello self confidence issues) I was able to fast everyday during a month. It made me discover strength I hadn’t expected at the time. Voilà désolée pour mes erreurs en anglais mais j’essaie. Thank you to share this experiment : you are not crazy ! Today We all try to find a path and to reconnect with ourselves in this very crazy overconnected world ?

Every religion has a moment to fast which, according to the belief, varies in time. The point is they all coincide on the necessity of self retreat, introspection and cleansing, using that time to look into one''s self from a different perspective. Most use moments of silence which lead to meditations or time to examine our conducts and reset them with our principles and beliefs. Spas, places were relaxation of mind and body is possible along with diets specially designed to make our body healthier and change everyday habits that are not healthy. Massages nurtured our body and hot stones may also desintoxicate our system. All of these are ways of surviving everyday troubles and giving us a chance to connect ourselves in a way which does not seem possible to carry out by ourselves. The main issue is to do it where and when you feel ready, and feeling a renewal by what you did.

Garance, how funny your life and my life are aligned! (Although if you really look at it, there is only one Life). I came to the whole self discovery process 2 years ago, although to be fair, a seed has been planted at least 8 years ago, and it sprouts 2 years ago, thanks to Ekhart Tolle’s book “The New Earth.” Since then, I meditate 40 minutes each day. I also started fasting 1 week ago, I do 18-20 hours fasting each day. It’s not hard at all, it seems natural. Our body needs fasting so that it can send out “janitors” to do spring cleaning for us. Good luck to you!

I had done it quite e few times @garancedore ? it has been amazing. And yes it is a mark to divide your life from “before and after fasting”. It is incredible how you can start clean again with your mind getting so attentive and awake. Your body thanks you for having a break and I believe fasting can heal all the problems a body can go through. ? I hope you enjoyed as much as i do.
