So many of us don’t live in the places where we were born. Often we have a longing - it sometimes feels like we’re all looking for our home, whatever that means. It took me so long to find a place I love so much that just the thought of it brings me peace. I never had any idea how it was supposed to feel like. I was a sort of escape artist. Escape from Corsica, escape from Marseille, escape from Paris, escape from New York... . I never felt at home anywhere. Then something fell into place. A city with the right tempo, a house that feels like me, a sense of quiet, a breath. . This feeling of a home is exactly how meditation feels to me. A personal, welcoming, peaceful place inside. Even when I don’t meditate, I know it’s here available to me. Meditation (and writing, which is like breathing to me) is my home wherever I go. But meditation is what works for me. For others it’s going for a swim. Praying. Calling family. . Traveling is upsetting for our bodies and for our minds, even if we don’t want to admit it because it is also so wonderful. We’re actually much more like children, or animals, than we would like to be. We need rest, we need rhythms, we need soothing, and we need a home. . I don’t travel as much as I used to. I don’t feel that constant need to escape. I want to deepen the connections to my place in the world, my family, my friends, my practices, my work, right where I am. . So my plans for this summer are : not traveling. Being home. You? . . . . . This photo was taken in my bathroom, which is my most private space in the world. It’s a bathroom for no one else, ahah. Selfish! No double sink!!! 😂. I am super lucky. But had I known that feeling I would have cultivated it earlier... Find a small space and make it yours. Even if it’s a tiny corner.
