Christi Bragg and her family loved attending the Village Church, one of the most prominent Southern Baptist churches in the country and a bedrock of Texas evangelical culture. When her daughter told her she had been molested by a minister at a church summer camp, Christi waited for an explanation and an apology from the Village, as well as for a conversation with its leader, Matt Chandler. Instead, she ended up leaving the church. The Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant denomination in the United States, has vowed to address sexual abuse in its churches, and said it would focus on the problem this week at its annual gathering of pastors.
