“There was no collection of evidence except off my body,” said Julie Ann Nitsch, pictured here in the denim jacket. She is one of the rape survivors in 7 different places who are suing officials for denying them equal protection. Frustrated by being disbelieved, ignored or outright scorned, these women have filed lawsuits in an attempt to force the police and prosecutors to improve their practices. The suits offer a wealth of shocking details: Rape kits so neglected they grew mold. Calls for help that went unanswered. Witnesses and victims who were never interviewed. For a long time, women have feared skepticism when they reported being attacked by someone they know, and advocates have worked to educate the public about acquaintance rape. But in these suits, a striking number of plaintiffs say they faced disbelief or indifference when they reported being attacked — kidnapped, choked, drugged and even submerged in water — by strangers. @ilanapl took these photos of Julie Ann Nitsch and Marina Conner, another plaintiff.
