Erin from @theheartandhaven here! I knew the kitchen was going to be one of the most expensive renos, so we saved it for last. We were originally going to keep the kitchen separate from the adjoining room, but having that extra time to live in and really see how we used the space ultimately led us to decide on taking down the wall. Good things can come to those who wait because I am so happy that the space is more open! While the rest of our home had all new hardwood floors installed a few years prior, we didn’t touch the kitchen floors until the reno (we just saved the wood in our garage for a couple of years until the time came). We had to make some aesthetic compromises during the reno: the wall was load bearing so a support beam had to project down from the ceiling and the soffit in between the two rooms couldn’t fully be removed because the HVAC had to run through it. However, there was a large water heater closet in the kitchen that we removed when we went tankless and were able to convert it into a walk-in pantry.
