In the early 20th century, the sailor suit was a popular coded LGBTQ+ signifier, especially alongside other symbols that hinted at homosexuality—a tight suit, red tie, and bleach blond hair, which you can see on the nearby civilian in Paul Cadmus’s 1934 painting “The Fleet’s In!” ⁣

Cadmus received a commission from the U.S. Navy to show sailors on leave, but his depiction of drunken sailors carousing with prostitutes and its suggestion of a homosexual encounter offended then-Secretary of the Navy, Claude A. Swanson, who demanded it be taken down at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, where it was on view. #MetCamp #WorldPrideNYC ⁣⁣#FleetWeek
