#HappyMothersDay! For centuries artists have turned to their family and friends as subjects and there's no better muse than mom. Here Rembrandt depicts an elderly woman—traditionally identified as his mother—in delicate, unsparing detail, describing her wrinkled face, hands, and the textures of her luxurious black dress and jacket in a web of fine, sharp lines. The twenty-six-year-old artist might have conceived this work as a tronie, or generic portrait, intended to demonstrate his skill at portraying all ages and ranks of society.
